What is Botox?
Botox is a substance derived from botulism toxin which is produced by the bacteria clostridium
botulism. The ability of the toxin to paralyze muscle has been used medically for years
to alleviate unwanted muscle spasm. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration first approved this
drug as safe and effective therapy for blepharospasm, strabismus, hemifacial spasm, and primary
axillary hyperhidrosis. Since that time, many dermatologists and plastic surgeons have been
using this drug for the treatment of "wrinkles" with great success. Botox is FDA approved
for cosmetic use to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines.
How does Botox work for wrinkles?
Botox blocks signals from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are responsible for expression
lines. By blocking this signal, the muscle is unable to contract and hence remains relaxed thereby
softening the unwanted facial lines.
Which wrinkles respond best?
Botox works only on dynamic wrinkles. The wrinkles around the eyes and forehead produced by
frowning, smiling, squinting, worrying or laughing are the most responsive: Botox will not improve
wrinkles due to aging or sun damage skin as these wrinkles are unrelated to facial muscle
contraction.
What are the risks with this treatment?
The anticipated risk and discomforts of this treatment are minimal. You may experience a headache, temporary redness, bruising, or stinging around the injection sites. In rare cases, you could have a slight lid
droop for several days or weeks after the injection. All the reported side effects of the medication
have been temporary. Very little of the botulism toxin is absorbed into the bloodstream. No
systemic adverse side effects have been reported from local injection of botulism toxin at the
doses used for wrinkles.
How soon will l see results and how long will they last?
Following the injections, it will take several days before you notice any change in your expression
lines. The maximum effect is seen at 2-4 weeks. The results should last for 3-6 months. As the
Botox effects wear off, you will begin to notice increased muscle action and some reformation of
wrinkles. Reinjections will be needed to maintain your results.
What is the procedure cost?
The procedure fee will vary depending on the area or areas you want treated. You can anticipate
the cost between $250-$400 per area treated.
