Molluscum Contagiosum Image 1Return to Index

This is the classic picture of the lesion of molluscum contagiosum. A domed shape, shiny papule with an indented or umbilicated center as seen. They often occur in children and are usually multiple. Often, if these lesions ar left alone, they will develop an inflammatory reaction with pruritis(itching) and surrounding inflammation of the lesion with subsequent complete resolution of these lesions. The problem is we don't know how soon that evolutional change will take place or how many of the lesions the children will get before that happens. Because they are contagious to other children, therapy is indicated. These lesions can also be transferred as a sexually transmitted disease with extensively involvement the genital areas. Patients with immunodeficiency such as HIV can have a very difficult problem with these lesions. Molluscum contagiosum is a very common viral infection which is often seen in children, tanning bed users, wrestlers and as a sexually transmitted disease of the genital areas of young adults. Lesions are common and are well demarcated, smooth, dome-shaped, firm lesions with a central dimple, pit or crater in its center. They can be transferred to others by close skin to skin contact.
