This nodular melanoma of variegate color with its irregular border demonstrates a pronounced "clearing zone" around it. Note in the clearing zone the dermatoglyphics are intact. There are none of the little telangiectatic vessels that you see scattered throughout the surrounding skin or pigmented lesions such as lentigenes or ephilides in this zone. The malignant melanoma is a very serious and aggressive form of skin cancer. It is responsible for approximately eight thousand deaths a year and appears as an irregularly shaped area of uneven coloring.
