Knowing that melanomas of this type can exist should keep you on guard everyday. It is a subtle lesion with some variegaton of color. Some of the erythematous areas are of amelanotic melanoma. A clearing zone is noted around the lesion. There is sufficient regression occurring in this lesion to suggest almost the development of a "smudge". Had the regression continued, it is unlikely that anything would be found of this malignancy until it showed up in a lymph node. One should always be on guard when examing pigmented lesions. The malignant melanoma is a very serious and aggressive form of skin cancer. It is responsible for approximately eight thousand deaths a year and appears as an irregularly shaped area of uneven coloring.
