This would be an easily missed lesion. The center portion of the lesion is certainly amelanotic. The redness or the erythematous nature of the lesion suggests it is an amelanotic melanoma area and not an area of regression. There is somewhat of a clearing zone around the lesion and sufficient variegation of color throughout the lesion with an irregular border to make the diagnosis of melanoma. The malignant melanoma is a very serious and aggressive form of skin cancer. It is responsible for approximately eight thousand deaths a year and appears as an irregularly shaped area of uneven coloring.
